A DRAMATIC last-minute penalty by stand-off Jon Liddell salvaged a vital point for York Acorn ARLC against high-flying Wath Brow Hornets in the National Conference premier division.
The Blue and Golds drew a pulsating contest 20-20 at Thanet Road to move a step closer to safety in the top flight.
The home side edged the first half, despite falling behind to a 13th minute try by Wath Brow winger Peter Caddy.
Andy Gargan responded with a try under the posts on 21 minutes and Kyle Palmer added the goal.
On the half hour a kick through from Liddell hit a post and scrum-half Tim Elliott was on hand to scramble over and Palmer again converted.
Palmer then broke the defensive line and sent full-back Joe Budd over for a fine try. The conversion made it 18-4.
The visitors scored a crucial try five minutes before the break through stand-off Graham Lupton to reduce the deficit to ten points.
At the start of the second half, Elliott, Davey Burns and Mike Embleton excelled in defence for Acorn.
However, Hornets hooker James Toman scurried over for a try on 58 minutes and Ryan Robb converted to make it 18-14.
When loose-forward Dave Pettitt crossed on 75 minutes, it appeared that Acorn would finish empty-handed.
However, the late heroics from man-of-the-match Liddell ensured they got the point they deserved.
Basement side Heworth were without a game in division two.
