YORK athlete Richard Buck’s hopes of reaching the World Indoor Games individual 400 metres final were stalled after he was baulked in the semi-final, writes Tony Kelly.
Needing to finish in the top three to make today’s final and a chance of world gold, silver or bronze, the 23-year-old Buck finished fifth pipping the Jamacian entry on the line yesterday.
Buck’s time was a disappointing 47.70 seconds for the two-lap indoor race in Doha. As the athletes made the break from their lanes, it appeared that Buck was impeded and he quickly lost yards at the back of the six-strong field.
The City of York Athletics Club ace had gone into the championships with a season’s best time of 46.5 seconds.
Now he will have to content himself with bagging a place in the Great Britain relay team, which will pitching for glory in tomorrow’s 4x400m final – the last event of the championships.
