YORK’S lord of the swing Simon Dyson was still battling for World Golf Championship glory in storm-swept Florida today.

Dyson, the world number 64, followed his first round level-par 72 with a second round 73 that left him one-over and in joint 41st place going into today’s third round.

He was 11 shots off early second-day leader, South Africa’s Ernie Els, in a field featuring all the principal players in the global game barring the still absent world number one, Tiger Woods.

So if Dyson continues to show the same scrambling qualities as he has over the first half of the $8½million tournament he could be in for a solid finish at the Doral course tomorrow.

Meanwhile, it’s hail to the all-conquering ladies of Malton & Norton GC after revelling in another winter wonderland.

The club’s women’s team were crowned the East Yorkshire Ladies Winter Golf Association champions for the seventh time since the competition’s inception in 1995 and for the sixth time in the last eight years.

The title triumph was sealed when Emma Brown, North Yorkshire’s most successful women’s amateur for the past decade, and club-mate Barbara Harsley won the final event at Driffield.

They posted 71½ to pip a brace of Ganton teams at Driffield GC.

That guaranteed a runaway success in the final trophy placings in which Malton & Norton finished no fewer than 26½ points clear of their nearest rivals Hessle.

The success has helped to get the club’s centenary celebrations off to the best possible start, and ladies’ secretary Sue Grewer said: “I am sure we are going to try to win everything this year.”
