Martyn Moxon has admitted he still does not know which players he will have available for the first two months of Yorkshire’s county season.
There are still plenty of ifs and maybes within the White Rose squad because of the success of players at international level.
It seems quite likely Moxon will have a number of his England internationals available for the first County Championship match against Warwickshire at Edgbaston on April 9 because Tim Bresnan and Ajmal Shahzad will be back from Bangladesh.
But the major problem comes between April 30 and May 16 when the World Twenty20 tournament takes place in the Caribbean.
Bresnan, Shahzad, Adil Rashid and David Wainwright are all in England’s provisional 30-man squad, hoping to make the final 15.
And overseas duo Ryan Harris and his replacement Daryl Tuffey are expected to make the cut for Australia and New Zealand respectively.
“It’s a little bit of an unknown as to who we’re going to have playing,” said Moxon, Yorkshire’s director of professional cricket.
“As they get better, they potentially get taken away from you. That’s one of the downsides of county cricket. It’s a little bit frustrating.”
Perhaps the biggest frustration surrounds Queensland bowler Harris, who Yorkshire only expected to be without for the first month of the summer due to his Indian Premier League commitments.
But now Harris, 30, has made himself into an integral member of Australia’s one-day set up, meaning a realistic scenario would not see him arrive at Headingley until early to mid-July.
Said Moxon: “It’s great for him that he’s broken into the Australian side and done well, but it puts us in a difficult situation in that we don’t know how much we’re going to see of him.
“We’re in a situation in that we’re not sure what we’re going to get.”
Kiwi pace bowler Tuffey is due to link up with the squad in time for the season opener in Birmingham, but it is Moxon’s understanding he will be travelling to the West Indies for international duty on April 27.
He added: “It’s one of the hazards of county cricket. It’s almost better for the players to be good but not good enough to play international cricket.”
