PICKERING manager Mark Wood may have complained his side weren’t ruthless enough after their derby win over Scarborough Athletic last week, but he’ll be hoping their demolition of Shirebrook is a sign of things to come.
The in-form Pikes followed their 2-1 win over the Seasiders with a 5-0 thumping of Shirebrook at the Recreation Ground and Wood will be hoping for more of the same against mid-table Long Eaton tomorrow in the Northern Counties East League premier division.
Goal machine Liam Salt added another two to his ever-increasing tally on Tuesday, with Danny Gildea, Luke Jenkinson and an own goal making it a great night at Mill Lane.
Wood has been thrilled at Pickering’s recent form and has high hopes for the remainder of the campaign.
“Overall, a top eight finish is now our aim for a good finish to our league programme and we are still in the League Cup,” said the Pickering manager.
Jonathan Newton is returning to fitness, while Rob Eeles has been missing because of a course and work commitments.
Christian Fox is struggling with a calf strain, and Lyle Hillier and Andy Park could be out until next season.
Any lingering thoughts Selby Town might have had of challenging in the NCEL premier division were all but extinguished when the Robins were crushed 5-0 at Hall Road on Wednesday.
Still in sixth place, they try to pick themselves up at Shirebrook Town, but they must do it without Michael Staley and Steve Lyon, who have joined Staveley.
Tadcaster Albion can almost touch the NCEL division one trophy.
A 2-1 win at Appleby Frodingham put Albion in third spot in the league, with five games to make up on leaders Brighouse Town.
Graeme Whitehead and an own goal from Robert Zand secured the points.
Pontefract Collieries, in seventh spot, are the next test for manager Paul Marshall and his men.
Harrogate Town, stuffed 4-0 by Stalybridge Celtic at Wetherby Road last weekend, travel to Lancashire for the return visit slumped at the foot of the Blue Square North table, while Harrogate Railway, fighting their own relegation battle in UniBond League division one north, entertain Trafford at Station View.
