New Earswick end bowls campaign with South Leeds win


New Earswick ended their Yorkshire League division one campaign by beating South Leeds 83-79, picking up 12 points to move off the bottom.

At home, Tony Abbot’s team dropped a single on the 20th end to go 19-18 behind but a four gave them victory, while Ken Harrison’s team lost the last two ends to go down 26-18.

Away, Paul Dawson’s rink won 27-16, but Barry Johnson’s team went from 15-9 down to 16-15 ahead, before dropping a three on the last end.

On Saturday at noon, York must beat Scarborough to close the gap on Featherstone who head Yorkshire League division one by 16 points.

New Earswick signed off their Hebden Trophy campaign on a winning note as they beat Hornsea 81-69, picking up 14 points.

At home, Bob Howland’s rink won 22-15 and Dave Thompson’s triumphed 24-17.

Away, Terry Shepherdson’s team had a 21-17 success, but Brian Birch’s side lost 20-14.

York secured second place without playing after Selby beat North Cave 81-76, picking up 12 points.

Champions Featherstone, York, North Cave and either Selby or South Leeds will play for the Hebden Challenge Cup at North Cave on Sunday, March 21.
