York City Rowing Club are gearing up for a hectic schedule as the head race season reaches a climax.

Tomorrow the club’s top junior rowers – two boy’s and one girl’s quadruple scull – will be taking part in the Schools’ Head of the River on the Thames in London.

A host of club boats will be contesting the Yorkshire Head on the River Ouse in York on Saturday, while the women’s eight are chasing glory in the Women’s Head of the River on the Thames on Sunday.

The men’s eight will line-up in the Head of the River in the capital on Saturday, March 27, with a veteran’s eight racing the following day.

That brings to an end the head season, before the regatta campaign kicks in with junior crews joining St Peter’s School rowers to represent Yorkshire in the Junior Inter-Regional Regatta in Nottingham on Sunday, April 25.

Phil Jones, junior organiser and joint club secretary, said: “All sections of the club are building up to some important events.

“It is the culmination of the head season, before the regatta season starts in the spring.

“The Head of the River races in London over the next few weeks are big opportunities for our top junior, women’s and men’s crews.”

Jones is confident the club’s crews are well-prepared, despite the difficulties posed by flooding in recent weeks.

He said: “With the amount of flooding we have had over the winter, training has been disrupted, but the situation has been the same across the country.”

Meanwhile, York City will be hosting a series of “learn to row” sessions this summer.
