York City outline potential of developing their 78-year-old Bootham Crescent home

York City would welcome the redevelopment of Bootham Crescent as an alternative to moving into a new stadium.

The Minstermen have reiterated that their “preferred option” remains relocating to a community arena on another site.

But, with City of York Council currently exploring whether any new facility could yet be based at either the football club’s current home or Huntington Stadium, community and communications director Sophie Hicks has, for the first time, admitted staying put might be a viable option.

The Press understands that should such a redevelopment come under consideration, then approaches might be made to acquire land behind the Popular Stand, currently owned by the Ministry of Defence.

Speaking in response to a report by community stadium project manager Tim Atkins, which will be presented to the council shortly, Hicks said: “As an alternative to the sports village concept, which is our preferred option, York City Football Club would actively encourage the expansion and development of Bootham Crescent to provide a modern 21st-century, income-generating facility, providing sustainability and longevity for professional football and rugby league in York.

“We are also committed to ensuring the athletes have a sustainable facility at an alternative venue to Bootham Crescent to fulfil their needs and aspirations.”

With land at York Central, Nestlé and Bustardthorpe all having emerged as preferred locations for a new sports stadium in the past before encountering stumbling blocks, The Press understands the University of York has now emerged as a leading, front-runner in the council’s search for a suitable site.

Hicks, meanwhile, added City would oppose any move to build a new arena at Huntington Stadium, where York City Knights rugby league club and City of York Athletics Club are based.

She said: “As a major funding contributor to the project, we would not support a move to Huntington Stadium. This is not an acceptable home for York City FC due to the running track within the stadium and the major traffic issues the site presents.

“Also, on Friday November 21, 2003, representatives from the Football Foundation, including Sir David Richards, visited the site, along with members of York City FC and the City of York Council. The Football Foundation categorically stated they would not support a grant application for £2 million for the refurbishment of Huntington Stadium, which would mean we would lose a significant portion of our available funding.”

Atkins. council report expressed concerns in The Press that funding from the likes of Yorkshire Forward, Sport England, as well as national and European sports’ governing bodies, might not become available in the time framework desired by the football club.

About the council’s financial worries, Hicks added: “We fully support the sports village concept which is being presented to the council executive by Tim Atkins. We appreciate the current tough financial climate, but we do believe the project is viable and the stadium options we have seen so far do not impact on the York taxpayer.

“We hope the Council is ambitious and forward thinking enough to pursue this vision for sport in the City of York for the benefit of the local community.”

Interesting that they're suddenly talking about redeveloping BC. My understanding was that the FF were explicit that they wouldn't fund redevelopment, only new build. So redeveloping BC would be in the same category as HS where the £2m was concerned. Interesting.

It's a big week for City's ambitions. With Stevenage and Oxford playing Tuesday and Saturday, and both having 2 hard games, it's conceivable we could close the gap a bit more by 5 on Saturday. It's also one of those weeks where fate lies outside your hands. A good night tonight and there'll be extra pressure on us at the weekend. But in my crystal ball, I can see us sitting 2nd, 1 point off Oxford, with one game more played, by 5 on Saturday.

I thought Persimmon had a contract to buy BC?
The University idea seems the most forward thinking - assuming the teardrop site is too pricey. The University area could do with more hotel accommodation which could form one of the stands like the Reebock.
Think Stevenage and Luton will win tonight although two draws prob better for City.

i would much prefer to stay at Bootham Crescent, but any danger of somebody making a decision on this??????
it's getting seriously boring.

YES! Lets stay at home, but why redevelop the pop stand? Why not just extend the family stand over the shop or something less drastic? Or better yet, leave the place exactly as it is!

Persimmon have a discounted first option, which would have to be bought out.

Leaving the place as it is means we'd still have over-the-top maintenance costs, allied to little commercial use. So that's an awful idea. Sorry Luke.

Long-term, moving remains the best option. The cost of the necessary redevelopment of BC to match the potential income generation at a new site doesn't bear thinking about.

we hope the council is ambitious and forward thinking enough, that sounds like a no to me, think of all the money the council has wasted, the Hq and Barbican just 2, they can't see a sports stadium would bring in extra money to the city economy, not just Football and Rugby Fans but conference facilities and maybe rock concerts etc, come on york city council get your heads out of your bums and grab this golden chance while it is there

From the report to the Council (it's freely available online):

"The project is on track and proposals with options to take the project forward will be reported to the Executive by July 2010"

"Development appraisials for the most appropriate sites and uses are underway"

If there's any chance that City can stay at Bootham Crescent and have the ground improved to an extent that income can be generated on days other than match days then that has to be the best option. Moving grounds has destroyed the soul of a lot of clubs. Much better to stay.

rogue84, York says...
1:15pm Tue 9 Feb 10

i agree with Zebedee, I think a lot of the fact that we're unbeaten this season is that once the fans get going, in conference terms, it's an intimidating place to play. there've been times (Rankine v Oxford Utd) when we've almost sucked the ball into the net at the Longhurst end.
I would always prefer to stay at BC, but it has to be financially viable for the long-term future of the club.
By the way i'm sure i read/heard the other day that shop-tennants in council properties down Goodramgate were having their yearly rent increased from roughly £12,000 to over £18,000.........whe
re's that money going?

Another note from the report, apparently the Council approved a £4m capital investment in the stadium project.

If you asked most supporters which would they prefer - Developing Bootham Crescent - or - Move to a new stadium on the outskirts of the city, I expect most of them would opt for Developing Bootham Crescent. Of course developing Bootham Crescent could cause us some problems with using the facilities. Unless all the work could be done in the close season, which is highly unlikely. This issue has dragged on long enough, it is now time for some progress.

Sadly there is no longer a Ripon site. It's now apartments and housing:(
Sad because I went there for two years...

It does look like we'll see decisions, one way or the other, this year.
The report outlines this July 2010 date for reporting to the Exec, which would be the point it moves into the next phase (confirming a site).
A good date to be aware of is May 2012, by which time they must have applied to the FF for the £2m funding. So by that point,t hey'll have to have a site identified, plans drawn up etc.

It is hard to escape the impression there has been a lot of time wasted, but hopefully the next 2 years will see us get a definitive answer.

Depends.
If the council say they'll sell the HS site and invest £2-3m income in BC as a community facility, we won't be able to say no.

Luton next Tuesday and Kiddy away in a few weeks time are the two games I am really worried about. If Chester go to the wall, Stevenage will lose six points, we will lose three. Exciting times.

alimount, Chester says...
10:12pm Tue 9 Feb 10

Bad results for the championship push. Luton are creeping up the league and could crash the top three.

On the ground topic, people have mentioned how moving destroys the soul of the club, well you just have to look at Doncaster to see the benefits. Successive promotions in their 'proper ground' and then a new ground kept the momentum going.
We'd all like to see BC stay the home of football in York but it won't be viable when we follow Doncaster's example and the fans begin to return and we're pushed for space on terraces!

alimount, Chester says...
10:19pm Tue 9 Feb 10

Oh whilst I remember to mention it, Chester's downfall and expulsion from the league before the end of the season is inevitable.
Considering tonight's results Luton are a genuine threat as they have drawn twice with Chester so only stand to lose 2 points. Oxford and us will lose 3 and Stevenage will lose 6. AFC lost to Chester so you can say they have gained too.
Sad times in Chester especially as I was looking forward to the Bank Holiday weekend in April.

i agree with 'Tug job' those games against Luton and Kiddy are massive now. probably a good thing that Ebbsfleet lost to Histon tonight as they'd have won 4 on the bounce if that had been a win tonight - ahead of our visit on saturday.

So, now the cat is out of the bag. YC will not tolerate a track so it very much looks like either things stay as they are with a bit of development @ BC or the track is moved to the University as was suggested years ago and the public will lose much of its accessibility. Thank goodness the track will remain in the new Olympic Stadium! This just looks like yet another CYC exercise in wasting our money. Next they will want to raise the Council Tax to pay for all these enquiries and administration!

Stevenage have half a dozen games that they will struggle with.Oxford are "Edgy at Home" and we won't be going to Kidderminster on the 13th (correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that the date of the first leg of the FA Trophy?) Could well be top of the league by next Tuesday night
