SEVENTH heaven was reached by City of York Hockey Club men’s 1st XI who smashed Stockton 7-2 to rekindle their North League division one promotion hopes.
York were on the front foot from the start and were 3-0 up within the first 15 minutes as Lee Cuffe bagged a hat-trick.
First, he deflected in a penalty corner before twice securing the decisive touch in the ‘D’ after good approach play.
Stockton pegged a goal back after capitalising on a stray pass, but York re-took the initiative in an action-packed final two minutes of the first half.
Nick Carter’s effort from a penalty corner struck a foot on the line, but the ’keeper saved Carter’s penalty stroke. York then forced another penalty corner, and this time did convert, Cuffe sweeping home the rebound.
York all but made the game safe with two early second-half goals thanks to Carter’s penalty corner and Alex Cockram’s reverse stick finish after a good run.
And after the visitors grabbed a consolation, Ollie Couttie completed the scoring.
City of York III and visitors Rotherham II revelled in a breakneck opening in which they were locked at 3-3 after 20 minutes.
The hosts led through Pat Herriott only to trail 2-1 before Greg Sykes levelled. Herriott then restored the lead to York but only for a short time as Rotherham struck their third.
After half-time it was City who showed the most initiative and Herriott scored his hat-trick goal towards the end of the second half. City held off severe pressure for the 4-3 win.
City of York IV mustered a superb point from a thrilling 5-5 draw at runaway Yorkshire division three leaders Grimsby I.
City took an early lead with a short corner strike by Sam Blackburn but the hosts replied with three goals before half-time.
A tough team-talk from skipper Tim Lister did the trick as City knocked in four goals in the first 15 minutes of the second half through Andy Wilson, Ben Foster, Lister and Blackburn.
That prompted stern pressure from Grimsby who scored an equaliser six minutes from time. They went all out for the winner, but York goalkeeper Kevin Fairs pulled off two stunning saves.
The late arrival of the City of York VI ’keeper led to hosts Harrogate getting a penalty flick from which they took the lead.
Though the rest of the game was even, York lost 3-1 with Rob Prentice on target.
A rasping start in which City of York VII went ahead against visiting Rotherham IV in the first 30 seconds through James Wilson underpinned a 4-2 triumph.
Goalkeeper Ed McCartney-Moore thwarted Rotherham raids before Elliott Colley converted a short corner to double the lead.
Alan Solanki and skipper Keith Wilson scored in the second half with Rotherham’s brace of replies coming late in the game.
Twice City of York VIII came from behind to topple hosts Brigg by the odd goal in nine.
On target for the visiting ranks were Kay, Fletcher, Reader and Moisley before a four-pass move ended with Reader hitting his second to clinch all three points in the last minute.
City of York IX suffered a brace of defeats.
They unluckily lost 4-1 at Wakefield VIII, where Alex Triffitt was on target, before 24 hours later they perished 5-2 at home to a strong York University III.
After trailing 3-0, the IX ranks narrowed the gap through Steve Archer and Triffitt only for superior fitness to kick in.
City of York Badgers routed Bradford 12-0 in the development league, where Matt Hays excelled with five goals, grabbing a hat-trick in the first half. Phil Worrall and Rory Ainslie also scored before half-time.
In the second half, Worrall added a second with goals from Lewis Inman, Harry Heyes, on his home debut, Rob Abell and coach Luke Doran.
