Heworth Amateur Rugby League Club’s National Conference first division campaign without a win continued, but the Black and Whites were a shade unfortunate to lose.
Hosts Thornhill Trojans triumphed 34-14, but for almost three-quarters of the duel Heworth more than held their own.
Said club spokesman Ken Sykes: “It was much more encouraging and we looked a bit more like a team.”
Heworth took the lead after two minutes, second rower Danny Sinclair crossing after good work by prop Liam Watling and loose forward Chris Varley. Unfortunately, Adam Caddie missed the conversion.
The hosts nudged ahead with a Richard O’Day try goaled by James Craven only for Chris Smith to send Luke Judson over the whitewash from close in. Again Caddie missed the kick and when Craven goaled a penalty the teams were tied at 8-8 at half-time.
Heworth were caught napping on the re-start with Craven sprinting 80 metres for a try on the overlap and soon after the extras were tagged on Richard Bostock bagged another try.
Just before the hour Tom Gargan burrowed over for a try converted by Gary Watkinson for Heworth to trim the deficit to 18-14, and for several moments threatened to get even closer.
But that man Craven broke for another long-range surge to the line and there were further tries from Bostock and Scott Green, with one conversion, to give a flattering margin of victory.
Heworth’s man of the match was scrum-half Craig Richardson, while debutant Sam Blayney also shone.
