YORK City chairman Jason McGill has quashed growing speculation that top scorer Richard Brodie is poised to leave the club during the January transfer window.

Championship clubs Peterborough United and Coventry City have recently checked on Brodie’s progress, while League One Huddersfield Town’s manager Lee Clark is also a growing admirer.

Brodie will beat Arthur Bottom’s club record of scoring 20 goals in a season by December 11 should he net in this afternoon’s home match with Wrexham.

He has been on target 38 times in 56 games since Martin Foyle’s arrival as manager last November, averaging a goal every one-and-a-half matches during that time.

New Peterborough boss Mark Cooper was on the receiving end of a Brodie brace when he was in charge of former club Kettering during September’s 2-0 Bootham Crescent defeat.

The Posh also have a record of recruiting non-League potential with the likes of Aaron Mclean, George Boyd and Craig Mackail-Smith all successful graduates, and Cooper has already raided Kettering for centre-back Exodus Geohaghan and taken Histon midfielder Josh Simpson on loan.

Despite reports declaring Cooper’s desire to sign Brodie, however, club owner McGill insists there have been no inquiries for the England ‘C’ international, who is under contract at Bootham Crescent until the summer of 2011.

McGill said: “The rumours are not true. We’ve not spoken to anybody about Richard – no club whatsoever.

“Nobody has contacted the club and expressed an interest.”

The board also declined to comment on how they would respond if they did receive a New Year bid for Brodie.
