MITRE held on to top spot in the John Smith’s Men’s Darts League despite a 5-4 division one defeat by St Paul’s.
Wins for Mitre pair Rich Corner (18, 20 and 180) and Steve Evans (109 c/o for 18 and 164 c/o for 21) kept them in pole position.
The St Paul’s stars were Chris Thompson (14, 17 and 180) and Paul Hopper (14, 14 and 2 x 180).
Shaun Day (180), Rich Saville (19), Gaz Witty (21), John Mooring (21) and Tony Cooper (18) helped Shepherds close on the leaders with a 7-2 win at Flag.
Flag’s top performers were Tom Hewer (110 c/o for 18) and Steve Hedley (21).
Adam Thompson (17, 180), Steve Atkin (17), Mark Mason (110 c/o) and Lee Brundrett (20) gave Acomb a convincing win at Tang Hall, whose only success came from Stu Hammill.
Greyhound had Dave Ginty (19, 21), Stu Limbert (19, 180) and Phil Brooke (18) in form, but Crescent took the decider through Kel Frankel and Paul Keers.
Division two leaders Crescent ‘B’ had Shane Hurst (24), Ken Smith (23), Neil Fairclough (23), Steve Smith (23) and Iain Smith (20) on form in a 7-2 win over Severus.
Andy Alexander and Dean Cairns had a 25-dart 701 for Severus.
Britannia’s Alex Renton (180), Mike Harrison (24), Rob Carr (23) and Steve Snowden (23) played well in an 8-1 win over Shepherds.
Fulfordgate lost 6-3 to Cueball despite Noel Cooper (21), Dave Hedley (180) and Chris Grant (22) playing well. Cueball’s Matt Wilson (19) and Kris Outerson (21) secured the win.
Turf’s Dave Hannigan (20) could not prevent a 7-2 loss to Tree ‘B’.
In division three, Derwent’s Martin Hodgson’s 20 decided the match against Acomb.
Paul Botterill (17, 18) beat Curtis Turner (18) 3-1 to qualify for the finals of the £1,000 York Open Darts competition.
He was joined by John Quantock (14, 17), who claimed his place by beating Chris Wilson (16, 19) 3-2.
The sixth of eight heats will take place tonight at Crescent WMC. Register by 8pm, toe the oche 8.30pm.
Meanwhile, the finals of the Crescent’s individual league will be held on Sunday at 8pm.
Among those competing for the £1,200 pot are Chris Thompson, Dave Smith, Quantock, Iain Smith, Neil Fairclough, Paul Helm, Gaz Witty and Alan Graham. All games best of 13.
