SIMON Dyson overcame a sickness bug to card a final round of 70 and complete an impressive debut in the WGC HSBC Champions tournament at Sheshan International Golf Club in Shanghai.
The two-under par closing round ensured the 31-year-old North Yorkshire ace finished the event on five-under par after earlier rounds of 72, 69 and 72.
Phil Mickelson, the world number two, held off a final day charge from South Africa’s Ernie Els to win by a shot on 17-under par.
Dyson finished in a three-way tie for 28th place after a fourth round which included birdies at the second, 14th and 17th holes.
His only dropped shot was on the 15th.
After his second round, Dyson spent ten hours in bed with the bug. On Saturday he dropped six places after shooting a level-par 72 in the third round.
After parring the first 12 holes, Dyson birdied the par-four 13th and after double-bogeying the 15th, he picked up a shot on the 16th.
Dyson’s winnings of 39,000 euros left him in eighth place in the European Tour’s Race To Dubai.
In the Ryder Cup standings, Dyson is second in the European points list and third in the world points list.
1 Lee Westwood £2,142,965, 2 Rory McIlroy £2,096,338, 3 Martin Kaymer £2,078,768, 4 Ross Fisher £1,876,022, 5 Paul Casey £1,794,937, 6 Geoff Ogilvy £1,491,706, 7 Oliver Wilson £1,486,749, 8 Simon Dyson £1,321,886, 9 Ernie Els £1,226,030, 10 Ian Poulter £1,220,681.
