Leeds United take firm grip at top of League One after 4-0 win over Yeovil Town

WITH a third of the season already gone, Leeds United have taken a firm grip at the top of League One.

A second successive 4-0 win opened up a seven-point gap on the chasing pack – yet for nearly an hour they struggled to break down Yeovil at Elland Road.

After the midweek demolition of Bristol Rovers, the Whites were hoping to uncork more champagne football. But for the most part the fizz was flat as the visitors dominated the opening period only to fall behind to a deflected Bradley Johnson effort.

Boss Simon Grayson introduced Max Gradel and Neil Kilkenny before the 60-minute mark and the effect was devastating.

Winger Gradel sparked sluggish Leeds into life and after he came in off the line to crack an angled drive in to the bottom left corner on 69 minutes, Leeds assumed complete control.

Yeovil could not cope with Leeds’ quicker play and their well-ordered game-plan fell apart as Jermaine Beckford outmuscled Terrell Forbes to finish with aplomb. United’s 11-goal striker was immediately replaced by Tresor Kandol who capped a dazzling 30 minutes by Leeds with a thumping header from Robert Snodgrass’ cross.

However, Kandol could be in trouble with the authorities after a final whistle altercation with Yeovil’s Sam Williams in the centre circle as the teams left the pitch.
