ALMOST there – that’s the verdict of York City midfield dynamo Levi Mackin.

The 22-year-old has been at the core of a Minstermen start to the season which has garnered a mere four points from as many games, a total City failed to swell in their fourth outing when they drifted to a 1-0 defeat at Mackin’s hometown club Wrexham.

With two more away games to come – at Hayes & Yeading tomorrow followed by a trip north to another newly- promoted outfit Gateshead – Mackin said City desperately needed a win so as not to have to have to make up too much ground on the early Blue Square Premier pace-setters.

However, the central operator, who is battling to shrug off the effects of a foot infection to retain his ever-present run in the start to the season, was confident victories were just around the corner.

Detecting increased signs of improvement in City’s displays, he said: “We are nearly there. We’re all putting in the hard work and we’re not that far away from gelling into a good team. The signs are there.”

He added he was bitterly disappointed how City’s first-half command at his one-time Racecourse Ground stamping-ground petered out to a single-goal reverse.

“We have played really well away from home without getting the results I think we deserve.

“We dominated at Oxford United but lost and we were certainly the better team for the first half at Wrexham, but we just did not get the goals we needed to kill the game.

“It’s just that little bit extra that’s missing, that’s all.”

With City again on their travels for their next two games, Mackin said it was imperative they turned their hard-luck story into the harder currency of points.

“We don’t want to be playing catch-up so we have to start putting away the chances we have created.”

It was a theme which echoed City manager Martin Foyle’s sentiments.

“We have got to turn it around. It’s all right saying we were a bit unlucky at Wrexham and at Oxford, but we seem to be reluctant sometimes to pull the trigger.”
