ACOMB’S Chris Thompson claimed the biggest scalp of his career when he defeated three-time world champion John Part in Wigan.

Thompson overcame the world number four 6-5 in the Blue Square UK Open North-West Regional Championship having earlier defeated leading ladies’ player Anastasia Dobromyslova 6-4 to set up the second round meeting with Canada’s Premier League star.

The Hitman went on to lose his last 32 meeting with World Championship quarter-finalist Barrie Bates 6-4, going out at the same stage as fellow York player Martyn Turner, who also claimed a notable second round victory.

Turner defeated 2006 Premier League runner-up and world number 21 Roland Scholten 6-3 after knocking out Robbie Newland 6-4 and winning his Roses clash against Wes Newton 6-5.

Another former world champion Jelle Klaasen gained revenge for his Dutch compatriot Scholten by ending Turner’s run with a 6-3 victory in the third round.

Clifton Hotel’s John Quantock went down 6-4 to Tom Martin in the preliminary round, while James Wade went on to win the tournament.

In the North-West Players Championship on the previous day, Thompson and Turner both succumbed to second round defeats.

Thompson beat Jan van der Rassel 6-2 and Ian Jopling 6-2 before bowing out to Wayne Jones 6-1.

A 6-4 victory over Andy Pearson saw Turner paired with top 20 player Denis Ovens, who defeated him 6-4.

Yorkshire veteran Dennis Priestley, a two-time world champion, won the title with Quantock again falling at the first hurdle, losing 6-3 to Dave Ladley.
