Kendo expert stages demo for York ‘dojo’

Japanese Kendo sensation Tashiro Sensei has demonstrated his art for York’s “dojo” at All Saints’ School.

Tashiro is regarded as one of the world’s leading Kendo competitors and achieved his eighth Dan black belt at the first attempt – a feat almost unheard of in the ancient Japanese sport.

Tashiro visited the York-based Kendo class, or “dojo”, with Great Britain national squad coach Matsumoto Sensei.

Kendo means “The Way of the Sword” and is one of Japan’s oldest martial arts, often closely associated with the Samurai.

Tim Waudby runs the York class at All Saints’ School.

Sessions are held on Mondays from 7pm to 10pm, costing £5.

Further information about the sport is available by visiting the website www.doshinkenyukai-kendo.org.uk.
