Loan signing Levi Machin poised to make York City debut at Eastbourne in the Blue Square Premier

YORK City manager Martin Foyle is ready to bolster his midfield by giving latest loan signing Levi Mackin a debut at Eastbourne tomorrow.

Mackin, 22, is set to line up alongside former Wrexham team-mates Christian Smith and Simon Brown in the City engine room, with another Racecourse Ground recruit Kyle Critchell continuing at right-back.

The 6ft midfielder has made 69 appearances and scored two goals for the Welsh club, making his debut in 2004 at the age of 18 during a League One meeting with Wycombe.

He spent three months on loan with Droylsden last season and has not featured in Wrexham’s first team since November.

Former Dragons assistant manager Foyle has also defended his decision to raid his old club after adding Mackin, who is one booking away from suspension, to his squad.

The City chief said: “I think a lot of people will be thinking ‘not another one from Wrexham’, but then a lot of people have said to me that the players I’ve brought in are better than the ones we have had. So I will take that as a plus and, if we can tempt Adam Smith back as well, it would represent good changes for the club. We’ve not been right in the middle of the park because we haven’t been switching play, getting forward or scoring goals from there.

“Changes needed to be made and some people will go and some will come in. That’s football.

“Levi can play with both feet and is a decent size. He’s similar to Christian Smith in that he can get around the pitch and snap into a few tackles.”

Former Wrexham trialist Adam Smith, who returned to Gainsborough a fortnight ago after a month’s loan spell with City, also looks closer to thrashing out a permanent move to KitKat Crescent.

Foyle added: “There’s a light at the end of that tunnel now and, hopefully, there will be some good news during the early part of next week.”

The City boss went on to express his satisfaction at the outcome of the meeting he requested with chairman Jason McGill following Tuesday night’s 3-1 Setanta Shield defeat at Barrow.

Foyle said: “He has been great and came in the next morning because he wanted to talk as well. We have a good working relationship and we both want the best for the club.

“He allowed me to go ahead with Levi and hopefully there will be one other through the door. I think the best players here will also respond positively to us bringing new players in.”

Foyle revealed he ran the rule over Leeds United trialist midfielder Ollie Hotchkiss during Wednesday’s 5-1 reserve defeat to Hartlepool with one eye on his plans for next season.

He said: “We had a good look at him and he did all right. We will assess the situation at the end of the season when we know whether Leeds are offering him a contract or not.” Foyle added that he would consider approaches for any of his current squad before the transfer window closes at the end of the month.

He said: “Nobody is indispensable and if we got the right offer, or somebody wants to take someone on loan, we would look at it.”

OLD - HEAD says...

Now that Martin Foyle has signed up players to cover the mid-field positions. I think that he should now do the honourable thing and play Mark Greaves in his orthodox position at centre back. When ever he has played against York City for other clubs, I used to think "I wish we had that guy playing for us". So I was delighted when Colin Walker signed him at the start of the season, but what do we do, we play him out of position and stick him in mid-field. Mark has received a lot of flack from the fans but he has soldiered on without moaning. So it is now time to give the guy a chance to prove what a decent player he really can be. We seem to have a major problem at York City by persistantly playing people out of position.

I'd agree with that. He's been doing a job because Walker signed an unbalanced squad, but now he can drop into the back, at least till McGurk gets back.

However, I would expect to see Parslow and Kelly there.

Out of position or not, Greaves needs to start acting the captain and motivating his team on the field. It can't all be left to Brodie.

I totally agree with OH and Imp. Greaves tackling is nothing short of superb, his presence is massive and he's definitely the man we need at centre half. Why Foyley turned to Kelly when TY got injured, I will never ever know. It's a shame that we have two good centre backs in TY and Parslow, as one of them needs to be moved out for Greaves- I'd choose Parslow I think

Yes, definitely Greaves for Kelly in my book.

Wouldn't play McWilliams out of position again either. Rusk may be better option until A Smith arrives, although not sure he has even travelled...

Pitch inspection at 10am, but looking ok.

There may yet be more of Wrexham's reserves still to come - heard a rumour Foyle's interested in Darren Kempson. Will the conveyor belt from north Wales ever end? Will somebody please set up a blockade and stop the invasion!

Very much doubt it. There's only one more coming in, and that's Adam Smith. Deal done, he'll arrive on Monday, small fee and a sell-on.

according to bbc website weve signed smith today for an undislosed fee,so that would seem to back up what imp says, and also beckett has signed for gainsbrough until end of season scored 7 goals in 8 games i know its league below but stil might have been worth us taking a chance on him

Glad we've signed Smith, he will add what we have missed since Woolford left. Skill on the ball, vision for a pass, good crossing ability and goals.

Kempson would be a good signing if it happens - he would be the big leader of a centre half we have needed for so long..Kelly and Greaves both have the potential to be this player but Kelly hasn't proved to be up to it consistantly and Greaves is never played in defence. If we sign Kempson I think Greaves and Kelly will be out.

There you go boss. Amusingly, the security word I had to enter to post this comment was "side-poor" - I hope that's not an omen for York's squad tomorrow!

PS. I hope that doesn't lead to a huge breach of press-website security...
