DANIEL McBreen is having to be patient in his quest to get on the pitch in York City’s pre-season campaign.

The Australian striker had been pencilled in to play some part in a behind closed doors friendly with Rotherham yesterday, but boss Colin Walker pulled the plug.

The Minstermen manager explained: “We’re keeping him back at the moment.

“Rotherham train at Doncaster’s Keepmoat Stadium facilities and we judged that the pitch was a bit hard.

“We didn’t want to aggravate Daniel’s knee, but he is working hard and, over the next seven days, he will get onto the pitch.”

Former Scunthorpe marksman McBreen only had a cartilage operation around a month ago and Walker is keen to ensure the 31-year-old is brought back at the right time.

The City boss also revealed goalkeeper Michael Ingham suffered a sprained thumb in the session, following a collision with Martyn Woolford, but said he would be fit for the visit of Premiership side Middlesbrough to KitKat Crescent tomorrow night.

On the Rotherham training, Walker said: “We got out of it what we wanted.

“The lads have been working hard in pre-season and we tried some players in different positions.”

* City’s youth team will host Sunderland RCA in the preliminary round of the FA Youth Cup.

The tie will be staged at KitKat Crescent on Tuesday, September 9, at 7.30pm.

Not that it means much, but do we know the result of the friendly against Rotherham?
