PEERLESS York St John are toasting a Sunday Afternoon league and cup double.

The York & District Sunday Afternoon Football League division one champions beat holders Clifton 6-4 in the final of the York FA Sunday Afternoon Cup.

The match got off to a flying start with St John taking the lead within 60 seconds of the kick-off when a corner by Neil Fryirs was cracked into the goal by Thomas Shirley.

St John's lead lasted all of five minutes as John Gothard struck back for Clifton with a well placed shot from outside the penalty area.

There were chances for both sides to take the lead in a very open match.

Clifton forged in front from the penalty spot after a handball was spotted by referee Paul Ballantyne, who had a good game.

The penalty was well taken by seasoned Clifton campaigner Dale Phillips.

There were no further goals in the first half, despite Clifton enjoying most of the pressure.

The second half started like the first, with St John scoring within 60 seconds of the kick-off to make it 2-2, skipper James Hartley cracking in an unstoppable shot from 30 yards.

St John hit a purple patch but Shirley and Fryirs missed three open goals between them before Matthew Cox slotted the ball through for Adam Russell to score and put the students 3-2 up.

On the hour, Clifton were back on level terms after a Phillips thunderbolt free-kick hit the back of the St John net with 'keeper Scott Hall rooted to the spot.

St John regained the lead almost immediately when Fryirs smashed in a shot following a solo run with the Clifton defence left static.

Clifton's Paul Bedingham had a shot cleared off the line before Fryirs made it 5-3 to St John with ten minutes remaining with a shot from the left wing.

Clifton fought back and reduced the arrears with a Richard Bedingham header.

However, the victory was eventually settled three minutes from time when Shirley netted his second goal.

The presentation of the Yorkshire Evening Press Cup was made by Dip Patel, of the York Football Association.
