SELBY Town’s FA Cup hopes ended in penalty shoot-out agony against higher-division Kendal Town at the Fairfix Plant Hire Stadium.

Sam Cable, returning from suspension, had earlier fired Christian Fox’s men in front during the preliminary qualifying round tie, but Michael Buchan levelled from the spot and there was no further scoring in extra-time.

Away keeper Stuart Dixon went on to save from Carl Stewart, as Kendal won 5-3 on penalties to secure a trip to Knaresborough Town in the next stage of the competition tomorrow.

In front of a crowd of 377, Selby keeper Michael Clancy combined well with Reuben Pearse to thwart Steven Yawson as the Evo-Stik Northern League division one west side started brightly.

Clancy also used his feet to save a fizzing drive by Sam Staunton-Turner and made a marvellous point-blank stop as the half-time interval approached.

That paved the way for Selby to forge in front during first-half stoppage time when Liam Flanagan’s left-wing cross was deftly headed into the bottom corner by Cable.

After the break, Jordan Snodin had a shot well saved and Ryan Gothard headed just wide, but a Kendal winger was tripped in the box and Buchan slotted the spot kick past Clancy.

In response, Cable shot just wide when put through by Chris Bilton and Stewart went agonisingly close with his head, but Staunton-Turner also contrived to miss the target with the home goal at his mercy.

The Cumbrians were then reduced to ten men shortly before the end of normal time, as Bradley Carroll received a second yellow card.

In extra-time Cable and sub Joe Dale both failed to capitalise on chances when played clear through.

Stewart also headed wide when sub Gary Collier was arguably better placed. and, with almost the last kick of the match, Dale forced Dixon into a fine sprawling block, before a clinical Kendal went on to convert all of their 12-yard efforts and Dixon joined in the heroics.

Elsewhere, Tadcaster Albion travel to Evo-Stik Northern League premier division side Bamber Bridge in the Cup’s first qualifying round tomorrow.

The Brewers juniors have also teed up an FA Youth Cup first qualifying round home clash with York City, having won 8-0 at Farsley Celtic thanks to Jon-Paul Turbine (2), Kain Rogerson (2), Harry Watson, John-Paul Vass, Joe Crosby and Kieran Greenway.

Pickering Town’s bid for their first Evo-Stik Northern League east division points takes them to fourth-placed Lincoln United tomorrow, having missed out on a bid for Scarborough Athletic midfielder Jimmy Beadle, who has joined Whitby instead.

A Beadle-less Scarborough visit Marine in the FA Cup, while National League leaders Harrogate Town host Havant & Waterlooville and Harrogate Railway entertain Penistone Church in the Northern Counties East League.
