Man of the match: Tim Spears – a real captain’s effort at loose-forward, constantly driving the Knights forward with and without the ball amid a huge contest in the middle, and amazingly doing it for all 80 minutes as well.

Referee: Marcus Griffiths (Widnes) – several funny calls.

Penalty count: 11-9

Half-time: 4-6

Weather: overcast and increasingly drizzly.

Attendance: 1,400 estimate.

Moment of the match: York were under the pump having fallen behind early in the second half but Connor Robinson picked off an attacking kick by Carl Forber close to his own line, sidestepped the first man and set off on a 90-metre sprint to the other end, for the first of two game-changing length-of-the-field efforts.

Gaffe of the match: There were a few handling errors – the drizzling rain playing its part – and the most costly for York was when Matty Marsh fumbled coming out of defence. Town got their second try on the back of that, Fui Fui Moi Moi crashing over to give them the lead early in the second half.

Gamebreaker: This belting game was alive until the very last play, courtesy of Joe Batchelor’s fumble at the death, and it was only over when, after Town had hacked forward, Ash Robson dived on a horribly bobbling ball to touch it down behind his own try-line – tossing it over the dead ball line just to make doubly sure.

Match rating: This was another League One cracker in a season of crackers for the Knights, the two teams slugging it out in the Cumbrian drizzle in a match which could have gone either way. According to the home media pack, it was an even better contest than when Town beat Bradford here. It could prove a momentous result for York too.
