Kane Williamson has urged Yorkshire’s bowlers to remain patient as they search for day two wickets against Worcestershire at Scarborough.

The New Zealand captain top-scored with 87 in Yorkshire’s first day 216 all out before the visitors responded with 39-0 at close, brought about early due to bad light and rain.

Worcestershire have won just once in the Specsavers County Championship this season, but they were buoyed by 19-year-old quick Dillon Pennington’s impressive career best four-for in only his third game.

Williamson remains confident Yorkshire can win for the fourth time in nine matches this season, but knows today is a crucial day for them.

“It’s about being patient. You can bowl good balls out there, but it’s about being in those areas for a long period of time,” he said.

“Maybe we tried a bit hard last night, but that’s natural in that situation. It’s important we settle into our work today.

“It's nice to have runs on the board. But, having said that, we need to be disciplined and try and put the ball in the right areas for a long period of time.

“It was tough out there, and you never quite felt in. There were a number of deliveries which kept you honest, and the wicket offered throughout the day.

“We did see that when you put a partnership together, you can score on it. But there were deliveries which can dismiss batsmen, and you can go bang, bang when you see that.

“There were some handy contributions from our lower order, and it would have been nice to pick up a couple of wickets last night.

“Dillon looks very talented.

“I thought their bowlers bowled very well as a collective, and they were all slightly different as well and complemented each other nicely. That was a large part of their success.

“They bowled in partnerships, and it's important we do the same.”
