Not many people celebrate their 60th birthday by opening a pop-up gym on London’s Southbank but then Daley Thompson is no ordinary person.

The double Olympic champion has always revelled in a challenge and this week proved no different, joining Bridgestone in inviting members of the public to Chase Your Dreams No Matter What by opening a pop-up gym for one day only.

At 60 most people would be winding down their exercise plans but for Thompson his strategy is the complete opposite, recently walking up Mount Snowdon as well – with others following in his footsteps.

So when it comes to incentive, this sprightly former heptathlete doesn’t need to look too far.

“My motivation was purely down to the fact that I enjoy inspiring people and this whole campaign is about inspiring people, whether you’re young or old or whatever,” he said.

“I think it’s a personal thing, I quite understand if people don’t want to take up exercise but I feel from a personal point of view is that it’s great fun seeing people attempt stuff that they didn’t think they could do so for me it’s a great thing.

“I’m not getting any younger myself but I think part of the problem these days is that people always tell you that you can’t do this or you can’t do that.

“Luckily with Bridgestone they’ve got this campaign that’s called Chase Your Dreams No Matter What because they believe that anybody can do anything. You just have to put your mind to it and plan how do get there.”

Bridgestone and Thompson have teamed up in their new Olympic partnership to encourage people to keep moving and chase their ambitions whatever their age, with the pop-up gym on the Southbank open for one day only.

And the 1980 and 1984 Olympic champion took that to new heights, with the Dream Higher adventure seeing 60 people aged 60 or over walk over Snowdon.

It’s projects like that which Thompson hopes can become the norm, determined to showcase that anything is possible with a positive mental attitude.

“They’d been training for a couple of months by going out walking and that kind of stuff,” he added.

“It was a really good experience, the weather was fantastic, the whole group of people were fantastic and I think they got a whole lot out of it. It’s all about inspiring people and I think was actually inspired by them much more than they were inspired by me.

“I don’t believe people found it easy, I know a lot of them had been training hard and they’d been losing weight and they’d been focussed on doing it.

“The challenge for most of them was trying to get the right kind of attitude.”
