THE York Minster Engineering League premier division returned with a bang as Dringhouses upset defending champions Wigginton Grasshoppers in some style to cause an opening-day upset.

The visitors dominated much of the game and deservedly won with goals by Sam Drake, Sam Backhouse and Dave Watson.

Houses went ahead early on when Matthew Mulhearn’s cross was steered into the bottom corner by Drake.

Despite numerous other chances for Houses, the scoreline was kept to a respectable 1-0 by the break, largely thanks to the acrobatics of Wigginton goalkeeper Michael Clancy.

With 20 minutes to go, the home side pulled level, Dale Holding finding Kain Rogerson on the edge of the area, with the 17-year-old guiding the ball into the far side inside netting of the goal.

However, Dringhouses seized control again and minutes later were back in front, Backhouse’s backwards header looping over Clancy and into the goal to make it 2-1.

As Wigginton pushed forward late on seeking another equaliser, they were caught out defensively and a penalty was given away following a last-ditch effort to stop a further goal for the visitors.

The resultant spot-kick was fired home by Dave Watson to seal an impressive 3-1 success.

F1 Racing came from behind to beat Osbaldwick 3-1.

F1 started brightly and had plenty of possession but could not make the breakthrough against determined opposition, the closest the came being when Chris Dempsey shot against a post.

The second half started in similar fashion, but Osbaldwick took the lead against the run of play on the hour following a slick move down their right which was finished off by Dan Davison.

F1 levelled almost straight away when Chris Dempsey headed home a pinpoint Chris Smith cross, and they had their noses ahead two minutes later when Dan Hickey fired home.

Hickey scored again following a determined run onto a through ball from George Trifan to secure the points.

Huntington Rovers lead the table on goal difference after day one after coming from behind to beat Tadcaster Magnets 4-1.

An early goal from Josh Wilson gave the away side some initial hope but a James Edmond strike cancelled that out fairly quickly.

A penalty from Tom Metcalfe, a delicious lob from Ash Hope and a standard Chris Dyson contribution combined to get Rovers’ season off to a flying start.

Honours were even in the battle between Dunnington and Thorpe United, after a 2-2 draw.

Simon Castle and Samson Wildwood struck for the hosts, with Luke Crowther and Daniel Rodwell netting for Thorpe.

The next round of fixtures will take place on Wednesday night.
