Yorkshire captain Steve Patterson praised Adil Rashid for his performance in their T20 win at home to Birmingham Bears.

The Bradford leg-spinner was a controversial selection for England's Test squad in their opener with India next week.

Having opted out of red-ball cricket for his county this season, Yorkshire were unhappy to learn of his decision to play for his country.

It also sparked a spat between former England captain Michael Vaughan and Rashid.

But the 30-year-old from Heaton was included in yesterday's win at Headingley and impressed with one for 19 from three overs.

Patterson said: "Adil was exceptional. He was professional like I'd expect him to be. I had a chat with him before the game and said 'Is your mind clear?'. He said 'Absolutely'. He proved with his first couple of overs how valuable he can be."

Yorkshire director of cricket Martyn Moxon was delighted with the victory, which saw the hosts hit 226-8 in a 31-run DLS success.

Tom Kohler-Cadmore (73) was pivotal to the win, helping Yorkshire produce the highest power play score in the Blast this season as they reached 92-1 off six overs.

Moxon said: "We're really pleased. Adam Lyth and Tom Kohler-Cadmore set the tone with a blistering start. They played some fantastic cricket shots. It was a tremendous effort with the bat.

"We then controlled it pretty well with the ball. It wasn't ideal conditions after the rain, but I thought the lads did a brilliant job.

"We've got three of the best (top order batsmen) in the country in this form of the game with David Willey coming in at three. It was an outstanding performance.

"Birmingham are a strong team, so to win the match and control it the way we did was excellent.

"T20 is a game of momentum, so to start this period (five games in eight days) with a win was important."
