JORDAN Clark claimed a stunning Roses hat-trick, dismissing Joe Root, Kane Williamson and Jonny Bairstow to help Lancashire claim the opening morning honours against Yorkshire at Emirates Old Trafford.

The White Rose looked in a healthy state at 59-1 after rain delayed the start of this Specsavers County Championship match until 11.45am.

In the 19th over, Clark trapped England Test captain Root lbw (22) and got New Zealand skipper Williamson the same way before Bairstow edged to third slip as the visitors slipped to 59-4.

They have since reached lunch at 61-4 from 21 overs.

Root had hit five fours and looked good before playing around a full one.

Williamson was caught on the crease before Bairstow drove outside off stump.

This was Lancashire’s first Roses hat-trick since Ken Higgs at Headingley in 1968.

The hosts elected to bat first upon winning the toss before seeing off new-ball pair Tom Bailey and Jimmy Anderson, with the latter not quite finding his radar.

Bailey bowled 26 consecutive dots, having conceded a single off his first delivery, before being taken off with figures of nought for seven from six overs.

And the introduction of Graham Onions brought immediate reward when he forced Harry Brook (six) to chop on with his second ball as the score fell to 24-1 in the 14th.

Adam Lyth will begin the afternoon session unbeaten on 31 with Gary Ballance on one.

Four overs have been lost from the day’s allotted 96.
