JORDAN Thompson enjoyed a memorable senior debut for Yorkshire as Travis Head became his first scalp.

The Bradford Premier League player had the former Tykes overseas batsman, Big Bash winning captain and current big-hitting Australia limited overs international caught by Gary Ballance in Sunday’s Vitality Blast win over North Group leaders Worcestershire at Blackfinch New Road.

The 21-year-old Academy product from Yeadon, who bats left-handed and bowls right-arm bustling seamers, certainly made an impression.

He hit 12 not out off six balls at the end of Yorkshire’s innings, boosting the total to 179-7 with a four over cover and a six over wide long-on.

Then he had left-handed Head caught at deep mid-wicket by Ballance to leave the Rapids at 58-5 and finished with figures of 1-33 from four overs.

To cap off a fine day, he held on to a smart catch at deep mid-wicket to help Steve Patterson remove Luke Wood at the start of the penultimate over. Wood was Worcester’s last realistic hope of victory.

Thompson earned praise from White Rose coach Andrew Gale in his post match interview, while former captain Ballance was also impressed with the Pudsey St Lawrence man.

“Jordan was very good,” said Ballance.

“He came in and hit a four and six to give us some momentum going into the bowling. For a young lad in his first game, he showed some very good signs in performing like he did.

“He bowled at tough times and bowled nicely, getting Travis Head out.

“It’s very encouraging for us moving forwards.

“He seems a very confident lad, which is great to see. He’s settled in well around the boys.”

In 18 appearances for Yorkshire seconds this summer across all forms, Thompson has scored eight fifties (680 runs in total) and taken 16 wickets.

His best of 77 not out with the bat came in a three-day Championship draw with Durham in mid-May, while his best of 4-17 with the ball came in a T20 win over Derbyshire a few days later.
