CITY of York ace Alex Botterill has secured a Team GB place at next month’s World Junior Championships.

Botterill has made the flight to Finland after winning the under-20 800m title at the English National Championships in Bedford.

He finished almost a second ahead of the rest of the field in one minute, 50.52 seconds and, having already met the qualifying time, earned the chance to take on the rest of the planet’s most-promising youngsters.

Tom Somers also struck gold at the U23 and U20 Championships, taking the older title by clocking 20.93 in the 200m.

He has represented York at all levels from County Schools to World Juniors but will now compete for Newham and Essex Beagles in the British League.

Lucy Hadaway, meanwhile, won a silver medal in the U20 long jump with a distance of 6.23m.

She is one of three highly-talented jumpers battling for a World Junior spot and has met the qualification standard, so is waiting the decision of the selectors.

Elsewhere, the club’s U13 and U15s travelled to Scunthorpe for the third Youth Development League meeting and preserved their 100 per cent record by scoring 590 points to again emerge triumphant.

With just one meeting remaining the club is on course to be promoted and the leading performances came from Fran Hogg (10.5 seconds in the 75m and 1.40m in the high jump), Emily Maude (12.2 seconds in the 70m hurdles and 4.00m in the long jump), Esme Pounder (12.2 seconds in the 70m hurdles), Louis How (27.2 seconds in the 200m), Ethan Pym (4.63m in the long jump) and Alfie Bugg (11.9 seconds in the 100m and 5.81m in the long jump).

Josh Dickinson, meanwhile, was part of the gold-medal winning England team at the World Mountain Running Championships.

At the Hull Half-Marathon, York Knavesmire Harriers’ Stephen Maddison finished third in 1.19 to collect the first male 45 prize.

Other Mire finishers were James Chambers (1.36), Mark Robinson (1.39), Abbie Hall (1.43) and Andrew McBurney (1.58).

The in-form Sarah Attwood also clocked a 1.30 in the Isle Of Skye Half-Marathon to finish third lady and second lady 35-44.

Next for Knavesmire were Nick Griffin (1.32), Stef Durkin (1.43), Alaistair Mcqueen (1.58), Alaistair Macleod (2.01), Viv Fraser (2.01) and Chris Attwod (2.14).
