MIKE and Josh Embleton celebrated Father’s Day weekend by both getting on the scoresheet during York Acorn A’s 34-20 triumph at Oulton Raiders.

The dad-and-son duo helped bottom-of-the-table Acorn A to their first win of the Yorkshire Men’s League first division season, with Jake Calam (two), Ryan Calam and Daryl North also crossing the line, while youngster Josh Parker kicking the other points with five conversions.

Veteran Mike Embleton has represented Acorn for more than 25 years, with Josh just starting out at 18.

For the first 25 minutes, Acorn withstood a Raiders barrage, including a period of five consecutive sets on their goal-line.

The defence was breached, however, on 25 minutes, as the visitors Oulton crossed outside and, then, repeated the feat shortly afterwards.

Both conversions were missed, but Acorn still trailed 8-0 and, having struggled all year, the visitors’ outlook seemed bleak.

But, just before half-time, some great work in the forwards saw Steve Waldron and Davey Burns make good hard yards before Brad Winter set Joel Johnson free, who found Ryan Calam to score.

Parker converted from the touch-line to leave Acorn just two points behind at the break.

Acorn also started the second period brightly and forged ahead five minutes in when, after moving the ball skilfully out wide, Josh Embleton found space to cross in the corner.

Parker was unable to kick the extras and Oulton replied almost immediately with an innocuous penalty 20 metres out giving them possession and their strong-running forwards proved unstoppable.

Five minutes later, a dropped ball in the same position gave the West Yorkshire outfit another opportunity and the big forwards crossed again.

At 20-10 down, though, Acorn were about to completely take control of the game.

The Thanet Road side’s next possession took them close to the line where North was too strong and Parker’s conversion further reduced the deficit.

On the hour mark, a great go-forward from Winter and Burns made territory before a long pass from Tony Shepherd gave Embleton senior the space to score with Parker again adding the two points.

Acorn’s endeavour was relentless and, with ten minutes to go and a two-point advantage, a neat grubber kick from Nathan Hammerton was best read by Jake Calam and his score gave Acorn the belief that this might be their day, with Parker’s boot again successful.

With Oulton tiring, Joel Johnson teamed up with Jake Calam and a reverse pass saw the latter touch down for the second time.

The man-of-the-match prize went to Brad Winter, who worked tirelessly for 80 minutes.

This time last season, Acorn ended a run of seven defeats and finished in a play-off semi final, with the hope now that this triumph can also galvanise the team.

In division five, New Earswick All Blacks A defeated top-of-the-table St Joseph’s 32-24 to move up to fourth place.
