HENRY’S Gym duo Elliot Heath and Jack Marshall have made sporting history by becoming winners of gold medals at the inaugural Lonsdale Box Cup.

The prestigious national amateur competition was staged for the first time in Penrith with Marshall overcoming Hartlepool Elite’s Jason Cummings to take the 48kg title and Heath defeating Charlie Mullen, of Lambton Street, to earn the 38kg honours.

Both fighters will now get to keep their belts if they stay within 7kg of their weight and successfully defend their titles next year.

The Acomb-based club, meanwhile, can now showcase 12 belts at their Regent Buildings’ premises with Sonny Wharton, Rivers Lee Wilson and Rob Magill becoming the latest county champions.

Wharton – the son of coach and former world-title fighter Henry – won the 56kg Yorkshire elite title after overcoming Logan Richardson, of West Hull, while Wilson (69kg) and Magill (75kg) triumphed against Tommy Coyle’s Liduas Zebrauskas and Redwan Nishat, of Millennium ABC, respectively.

On the club’s continuing success, proud coach and father Wharton said: “Professionals have been fighting for Lonsdale belts for more than a century, but Jack and Eliott have made history by winning medals at the first-ever Lonsdale Box Cup for amateurs. Their performances were second-to-none and everybody there was commenting on their skill levels.

“With the three new belts, it’s also been a brilliant end to a brilliant season for the gym, but we still want to get better and all our young kids our aspiring towards that goal. They see the belts that are coming into the club and want one for themselves.”

Henry’s Gym will now take ten fighters to the Haringey Box Cup, which starts on Thursday.
