F1 RACING Reserves claimed their first-ever cup win as they beat Thorpe United Reserves 5-4 on penalties in the York Minster Engineering League Reserve Cup final.

For Thorpe, the disappointment comes in the same week that their first team - who won promotion to the premier division - lost 6-1 to Huntington Rovers in the League Senior Cup final.

There was little to choose between F1 and Thorpe in the first half, with Thorpe opening the scoring on 15 minutes with a thunderous strike from outside the box.

F1 started the second half the brighter but Thorpe always looked dangerous on the attack and F1 had keeper George Bellerby to thank to keep the deficit at one goal.

But, with seven minutes to go, F1's increased pressure paid off as youngster Joel Gallagher-Coates held off two strong challenges to fire into the bottom corner.

F1 pushed for a late winner but good saves from the Thorpe shot-stopper kept the scores level and ensured the match would go to penalties.

The shootout was again tight and it took Thorpe to miss their fourth for the game to be settled.
