CITY of York Athletics Club bagged the joint-second best medal haul of any club at the Yorkshire Track and Field Championships.

Only City of Sheffield and Dearne, with 56, surpassed York’s 43 medals at Cudworth, while Wakefield Harriers matched their total.

York won 14 golds, 12 silvers and 17 bronzes to better the tallies achieved by traditional Yorkshire powerhouses Leeds City, Hallamshire Harriers, Rotherham Harriers and Doncaster.

The hammer proved the club’s strongest event, with Maria Schofield (under-20s women), Samuel Schofield (U15 boys) and Eleanor Armstrong (U15 girls) taking victory with respective throws of 41.28 metres, 17.41m and 26.13m.

York also secured a women’s long jump double thanks to Lucy Haddaway (U20s) and Amy Rolfe (U17s) with winning leaps of 6.12m and 5.64m.

On the track, the club bagged a 400m hurdles brace as Charlotte Stamp won the senior women’s event in 65.36 seconds and Ben Schofield the U20s men’s title in 60.49.

There were four further field event golds to celebrate.

Oliver Wright took the U20s men’s javelin with a throw of 54.28m, while Christina Nick (45.98m) claimed the senior women’s discus.

Alfie Bugg won the U15s boys’ long jump with 5.86m, with Lincoln Walsh (7.66m) adding the U13s boys’ shot.

Reece Middleton powered to victory in the senior men’s 400m final, clocking 48.88 seconds.

Callum Simpson added the senior men’s 800m honours to the club’s tally in a time of 1 minute 57.45 seconds.

In the shortest race of the weekend, Frances Hogg won the U13s girls’ 80m in 11.06 seconds.

A great weekend was capped by Alex Botterill setting a new club 800m record in the British Milers’ Club meeting at Sport City, Manchester.

The U20s star clocked 1 mins 48.48 seconds in finishing fifth to edge closer to the 1-48.25 World Junior Championships qualifying time.
