HEAVY morning rain wiped out all but one of the opening round of Foss Evening League fixtures on Wednesday.

The only match to survive was at Thixendale where a swift breeze helped dry up the ground ahead of Ovington’s visit in division three.

Thixendale restricted Ovington to 78-5 in the 16-over match with tight bowling from Ben Brown and 15-year-old Guy Scothern. The York side only had 12 on the board from the first five overs.

The Brader father/son combo of Adrian and Tom kept the pressure on with young Luke Scothern keeping it tight at the death. Dominic Carras top scored for Ovington with 25.

Thixendale started disastrously as batsman Joe Robinson fell to the first ball of the innings from Dom Kitching, top-edging to wicketkeeper Stefan Littlewood.

Ben Jackson (38) then smashed Ovington’s bowling all around the park with Jules Lawrence (19) and Simon Walgate (21no) finished off the run-chase within 10 overs for a seven-wicket win.

The expanding FEL will operate with four divisions this season and there have been some club name changes. Retreat are now The Wellington CC, Dunnington 1sts are Dunnington Academy, Dunnington 2nds now Dunnington Colts and Stamford Bridge Academy are playing as Stamford Bridge.
