SEAN Stockdale opened and completed the scoring as Rufforth United beat Thorpe United reserves in an eight-goal thriller to lift the York FA Saturday Junior Cup at Tockwith.
In between, Stockdale’s team-mates Danny Cates, Liam Keenaghan and Dave McNichol also netted in the 5-3 triumph with Jay Smythe, James Hunt and Tom Knight replying for Thorpe.
Stockdale’s 25-yard drive found the bottom corner, as Rawcliffe drew first blood.
That advantage lasted a single minute, however, when Aaron Tiplady teed up Jay Smythe to finish tap in.
In response, Keenaghan’s 30-yard shot lashed against the crossbar and rolled down the Thorpe upright before Cates sent Rufforth into the break 2-0 to the good following a fine solo run.
Thorpe levelled again on 54 minutes, as Hunt pounced following a goalmouth scramble and Knight then gave his team the lead for the first time.
It was 3-3, though, when Keenaghan hit the target with a dipping 25-yard and McNichol restored Rufforth’s advantage just a minute later.
Stockdale put the outcome beyond doubt on 85 minutes when he curled in a 25-yard free kick.
The trophy, sponsored by Construction Marine Ltd, was presented by York FA member Colin Atkinson.
