SELBY Town are masters of their own destiny, believes manager Christian Fox, as they enter the final stages of the Northern Counties East League division one season.

Before the Grimsby Borough game last night, the Robins lay ninth and 11 points off the play-off places – but with six games in hand.

Selby suffered West Riding County Cup final disappointment on Tuesday night, losing 4-1 to Farsley Celtic, but will travel tomorrow to 16th-placed Ollerton Town carrying pride in their performance and lessons learned.

Fox said: “It’s in our own hands – if we do what we need to do then we’ll find ourselves in the play-offs.

“We’re just taking one game at a time. We’ve got seven games to fit in and six of those are at home, so we need to take advantage of that.

“It’s mathematically possible and we’re remaining positive.

“I don’t think we can look at the final from a disappointment point of view.

“Farsley’s quality showed and it was always going to be a struggle. It’s more about being proud that we managed to get to that final.

“The Tadcaster game was our final and the Farsley game was a bonus – it was a good night out for everyone.

“I think the lads had spells in the game where they were on top and those are the moments you need to score.

“We created chances, but Farsley taking theirs showed the difference in quality.”

The Robins got off to the worst possible start against the Evo-Stik League premier high-fliers who took the lead after three minutes through Paul Walker but, to their credit, Selby shrugged off the early setback to grow into the game.

Farsley were always in the ascendancy with their pace and crisp passing and it was only a matter of time before the second goal came as Nathan Cartman struck just before the break.

Selby struggled to create any sustained pressure but had chances through Joe Dale and Liam Flanagan, who had worked an opening only to fire over the bar as the last action of the first period.

Farsley added two more just after the hour through Luke Parkin and Cartman before Selby got their deserved consolation with Flanagan's deflected effort with six minutes remaining.

Knaresborough Town won 2-1 at FC Bolsover on Wednesday night to make the division one title a mathematical certainty.

Tomorrow, Boro host third-placed Yorkshire Amateur who still harbour hopes of automatic promotion. The Ammers have netted 17 in three games, on Tuesday seeing off Ollerton Town 6-1.

The premier division’s third-placed side Pickering Town host 10th-placed Bottesford Town tomorrow. The Pikes are 10 points off the summit with three games in hand having beaten Athersley Recreation 2-0 on Monday night.

Bottesford won 2-1 at Hall Road Rangers on Tuesday after losing the previous two against Maltby Main and Staveley Miners Welfare.

Harrogate Railway Athletic tomorrow travel to bottom side Clipstone who have picked up only one point all season and shipped 49 goals in the past seven games.

Last week, the Cobras lost 6-1 at Handsworth Parramore.

Meanwhile, the Rail have enjoyed back-to-back 2-2 draws. On Wednesday, Shane Hamilton got a late goal to rescue a point at home to Penistone Church.
