SELBY Town will have to wait a little while longer yet to end their West Riding County Cup drought after losing 4-1 to Farsley Celtic in the final last night.

The Robins, who had manager Christian Fox absent through suspension, battled manfully throughout but the quality of the higher-tier Celts showed as they denied Selby their first trophy in the competition since 1949.

It was six minutes from time when the Northern Counties East League division one's fourth-highest goalscorer Liam Flanagan found the net for a deserved consolation.

Town had Chris Barrett in goal with Reuben Pearse and Alex Robinson at full-back while George Foster-Vigors had come in for the injured captain, Ryan Gothard, with Danny Snaith featuring in midfield.

Selby got off to the worst possible start with Evo-Stik League premier promotion-chasers Farsley’s pace and crisp passing causing immediate problems and they were ahead after just three minutes lead through Paul Walker.

To their credit, Selby shrugged off the early setback to grow into the game, although Farsley were always in the ascendancy and goalkeeper Barrett distinguished himself on many occasions.

It was only a matter of time before the second goal came and it fell to Nathan Cartman just as the first half was coming to a close.

Selby struggled to create any sustained pressure but they did have chances through Joe Dale and Flanagan, who had worked an opening only to fire over the bar as the last action of the first period.

The Robins brought on Gary Collier for Alex Robinson, Chris Bilton for Ryan Woodhead and Danny Gray for Danny Snaith for the second half but they were still unable to create any sustained pressure.

Farsley, as a result, were able to attack with eight men going forward and added two more through Luke Parkin on the hour and Cartman's second five minutes later, despite Barrett's heroics in goal.

As the clock ticked on, Selby became more adventurous in the search for a consolation and got it through Flanagan's deflected effort.

Speaking to the club's new website, selbytown.co.uk, chairman Thomas Arkley said: "I would just like to congratulate the guys for reaching the final of the West Riding FA County Cup - an achievement in itself.

"You did us all proud and you did not let the club down."
