ACOMB Hockey Club Men I lost a one-goal lead in their 2-1 at Yorkshire League division two high-fliers Harrogate III - late goals giving the hosts the spoils.

Harrogate opened the game passing the ball well and they had chances to begin with, but Stuart Baxter stood firm in central defence and last-ditch clearances kept the scores level.

A superb diving save from a penalty corner by Tangerines keeper Craig Brown pushed the ball to safety, while Carrick Blacker and James Tindall always looked dangerous on the break.

Midway through the half, Acomb opened the scoring as Matt Dickenson’s drag flick penalty corner fiercely flew past the static defence.

With Dave Richardson and Paul Wright working hard in central midfield and frequently finding the Tangerines' front line, Harrogate’s control of the play was reduced going into the break.

After the restart, however, the Tangerines' threat was limited to only a handful of chances against which the home keeper stood firm.

Blizzard-like conditions enforced a 10-minute break in play after which Harrogate came out strongly.

The visitors' tireless player-of-the-match, Bob Unsworth, alongside Ryan Smith, kept the hosts at bay until they finally levelled with 10 minutes remaining after Acomb failed to intercept a left-wing cross and the home side's skipper swept in.

With time running out, Baxter was shown a green card for a tackle - upgraded to a yellow due to dissent - and Harrogate's captain struck again to slam in the winner.

Acomb Men II were downed 4-1 at division five north promotion-chasers and table-toppers Harrogate V.

Harrogate had the elements behind them in the first half and they took the lead in the eighth minute from a penalty corner.

They continued to press and earned a series of penalty corners which either missed the mark or were kept out by good defensive work.

The division leaders eventually broke past Acomb's defence in open play and doubled their advantage with keeper Richard Crossland helpless to prevent it.

Two penalty corners in quick succession after 20 minutes further pressured the visiting defence and the second went in to give Harrogate a healthy lead going into the break.

Acomb came out strongly after the restart but could not prevent Harrogate getting their fourth.

With 21 minutes on the clock in the second half, Acomb skipper Jonny Brown netted to reduce the deficit, but the visitors could not make further headway, while a last-minute double save from Crossland kept the score respectable.
