YORK consolidated their lead at the top of Yorkshire One by winning 28-17 at a bitterly-cold Moortown.

Sam Potrykus, Joe Maud and Gareth Singleton all grabbed tries for the visitors, with Jon Dawes and George Davies kicking the rest of the points.

York had first advantage of a strong wind and opened their account on the quarter-hour mark courtesy of a Dawes penalty.

But the hosts hit straight back with some slick handling which created space for wing-man Tom Moorby to score in the corner, although the conversion attempt fell well short against the wind.

At that point in the match, Moortown were beating York at the breakdowns, which were strictly controlled by the referee, but a try from Potrykus restored the Clifton Park outfit’s lead.

His sheer pace saw him burst through in the centre for a great score.

Dawes' conversion attempt floated wide, but he made no mistake with his next penalty to give York an 11-5 interval lead, which seemed likely to be insufficient given the conditions.

The away team’s lead was increased, though, when Maud touched down under a driving maul following a 15-metre march to the home line followed by a successful conversion.

York were then forced into a number of changes with Davies on for Ian Hessay, Marc Benson replacing Luke Stockton and Steve Johnson making way for Dan Coe.

Singleton forced his way over the line moments later, after some good handling in the York backs, while Davies added a neat conversion.

A yellow card for Coe then brought Johnson back into action and Town used their advantage to put Moorby over for his second try.

In response, the table-toppers grabbed another penalty, but the hosts had the final word with a 15-man pushover try during the closing exchanges.

Summarising the display, a club spokesperson said: “It was a good performance by York, whose solid defences were given a stern test by the talented Moortown outfit.”

York's opponents for the semi-final of the RFU Intermediate Cup have been decided, meanwhile, with Droitwich overcoming Whitchurch 19-7 in Saturday's Midlands final.

The last-four clash will be played at Droitwich on Saturday, March 31 (3pm), with the winners going on to contest the final at Twickenham on Sunday, May 6.

At the other end of the Yorkshire One table, Selby gave themselves extra hope of escaping the drop zone thanks to a crucial 16-5 win at basement side Wheatley Hills.

Elsewhere in the Northern Divisions, meanwhile, lowly Pocklington's North Premier game at high-flying Harrogate was postponed because of the recent spell of wintry weather, while Malton & Norton's scheduled game at Bridlington was postponed last week as Brid could not raise a side due to a stag do.

York RI lost 45-5 at Thirsk, a team below them in the table, in their Yorkshire Four Shield game.
