TREBLE-SEEKING Old Malton St Mary's enjoyed a super start to a potentially big week as they beat York Railway Institute to keep their title hopes alive.

St Mary's will look to defend their North Riding County FA Saturday County Cup on Wednesday night as they take on Teesside League team Boro Rangers in the final at North Riding County FA headquarters (7.30pm)

And they warmed up with a 4-0 home victory over RI to cut the deficit to York Minster Engineering League premier division leaders Wigginton Grasshoppers back to 17 points and still with five games in hand.

The league programme elsewhere was once again decimated by a cold snap with only a handful of the scheduled games going ahead due to snowbound and waterlogged pitches.

Malton & Norton's game was one to beat the weather but they might wish it hadn't as they lost 5-0 at home to F1 Racing, who moved up to third in the table.

The visitors went ahead in the first half through Alex Martin as both sides fought an even period against a howling wind and driving snow, before they took control in the second with Martin completing his brace.

Further efforts from Chris Dempsey and Jason McCloud along with an own goal sealed a comfortable win.

The only other league fixture to go ahead was in reserve 'C', with Brooklyn seeing off Stamford Bridge 7-2, Robert Templeton and Jordan Elliott on target for Stamford.

There were more games played in the cup competitions.

In the League Junior Cup second round, Josh Winn hit five for Haxby Town as they demolished Swinton 7-1. Adam Chaplin and Josh Leeming fired the home side's other two goals.

Liam Booth got two and Karl Laverick one to send Barmby Moor into round three with a 3-0 win over Huby United. Bishopthorpe United will join them in the draw after a 5-2 success over The Raj.

Five matches went ahead in the League Reserve Cup second round, with three of them seeing top-flight teams progress.

Old Malton St Mary's led by three goals at half-time at Copmanthorpe and saw the game out to win 5-1, with Andy Turner getting the consolation for the home side.

Hemingbrough United also went into the quarter-finals after a 5-2 success at Easingwold Town. Luke Zacharenko hit a treble with Daniel Thompson and Jamie Pickles also making the scoresheet.

Steve Jarvis bagged a hat-trick, the third from the penalty spot, as Wigginton Grasshoppers defeated Dunnington 3-0.

F1 Racing will also be in the draw after winning a one-sided match against Rufforth United 9-0.

Ed Kay, Fraser Shields and Joel Gallagher-Coates all struck twice with Craig Hardcastle, Scott Snowden and Alex Fowler also inflicting damage.

A goal in the snow from the aptly-named Ryan Sledge was enough to fire Tockwith to a 1-0 success over Tadcaster Magnets.

In the York FA Junior Cup semi-final, meanwhile, Thorpe United Reserves had a comfortable 4-0 home win over Pocklington Town 3rds thanks to goals from Anthony Jennings, Tom Knight, Aaron Tiplady and man-of-the-match Dan Mustil.

They will face Rufforth United, who passed through with a 3-2 win at Civil Service.

Declan Richardson gave the hosts the lead but goals by Josh Parker, Danny Gates and Lee Dutton turned the game around. Parker got another for Civil Service but it was not enough.
