YORK Indoor Bowls Club have enjoyed success in two National Area Play-Offs and three Yorkshire County finals.

In the former, the Over-60s Fours team of Alan Vowles, Phil Parsons, Malcolm Lewars and Tony Horobin led their Cumbrian opponents 11-2 after only five ends and 14-5 after 10 before the game was conceded with two ends to play and the score at 22-10.

York now play Victory IBC, of Portsmouth, in the last 16 at Nottingham on April 7.

Lewars followed this success with a win in the Over-60s Singles.

He led Cumbrian Tony Little 17-11 and, while being pegged back to 18-17, he finished with three singles to triumph 21-17 and move into the last 16 where, on April 13 at Nottingham, he will play the winner of the Hampshire Area Play-Off.

Lewars, though, had less luck in the Senior Singles final during the Yorkshire County Finals Day held at New Earswick.

He scored a three against Redcar's AW Jones to cut the deficit to 19-17 with two ends to play but Jones picked up two singles to win 21-17.

There were victories and county crowns here for York club-mates, though.

Stuart Smith took the Men's Singles title after beating B Robinson, of Redcar, 21-11.

Having trailed 12-3, Robinson won the next four ends to be in with a chance at 12-9 behind, but Smith won six of the last eight.

Alan Vowles and Helen Wood stormed to the Mixed Pairs title.

Three threes and a four saw them lead North Cave's E Dayes and P Dibnah 14-0 after five ends. Cave scored a four at the 14th but only managed to win four ends in the whole game and conceded after 17 ends with the score at 25-7.

N Mallam, M Parker and J Backhouse held on to beat Thornaby's C Russell, D Fairbairn and G Furby 19-17 in the Triples final.

The York trio scored a four and a five in the first four ends to lead 11-0 but Thornaby fought back to 16-13 down with four ends to play. York won the next two to lead 19-13 but Thornaby picked up a three to go into the last needing another three to force an extra end. They managed only a single.

The county trophies were presented by Yorkshire County Indoor Bowling Association president David Elcock.

Meanwhile, Yorkshire Under-25s easily beat Suffolk in the U25s Inter-County Double Rinks semi-finals.

The game was played at Grantham and saw York’s Neal Macdonald and Kieran Earnshaw, joined by Harrogate’s James Frith and North Cave’s Liam Creaser, pull away from 4-4 to win 20-5.

The other rink of Scarborough’s John Hall, Matthew Bell and Jack Bird plus North Cave’s Luke Nicholls won 23-8.

Yorkshire now meet last season’s winners, Devon, who pipped Essex 42-41 in their semi-final.

The final will be at Melton & District IBC on March 25, starting at 1.30pm.

Meanwhile, tomorrow at noon, York IBC hosts the Mason Trophy tie between Lincoln and West Denton which was postponed due to bad weather earlier this month.

On Saturday, the Hebden Challenge Cup takes place at York IBC featuring teams from York, New Earswick, Selby and Leeds, starting at 10am.
