NESTLE Rowntree RUFC suffered only their second loss of the Yorkshire Northern Merit League One season when falling 28-12 to Selby 3rds.

The game was switched to neighbouring York RUFC's Clifton Park ground due to problems with the Rowntree pitch - York coming to the rescue at short notice.

Table-toppers Trees started with the wind behind them but, right from the off, the much-changed Selby side showed they were in no mood to let them take control.

It took a good break from centre Nick Thompson to open the scoring, with Jack Daniels adding the conversion for a 7-0 lead.

But mid-table Selby came back strongly and after 15 minutes powered over to level the scores.

They repeated the dose just five minutes later to go 14-7 ahead.

Trees were rocking but they themselves came back and winger Owen Harrison finished a good move in the corner to cut the deficit to 14-12 at the break.

Trees dominated the third quarter but Selby's defence held firm and, from a stray penalty, the visitors got the advantage back and scored near the posts to increase their lead to 21-12.

Trees threw everything they had at Selby thereafter but again a missed kick for touch saw the away team run the ball well to score another converted try and compete their victory.

Nestle remain top but their lead now stands at 12 points and second-placed Moortown 3rds have two games in hand.
