CITY of York Athletic Club’s Alex Botterill made his senior England debut in the BBC-televised Great Edinburgh Cross Country meeting.

The 2017 Commonwealth Youth Games 800 metres champion ran leg three for England in the mixed relay event, which was won by a Great Britain side featuring Laura Muir.

Botterill’s England team finished eighth as he clocked 2 minutes 54 seconds for his 1km leg.

Meanwhile, his City of York colleagues, Angus McMillan and Josh Schofield, competed for the North of England in the Senior and Junior Men’s Inter District race at the same meeting.

McMillan (26-59) finished eighth and Schofield (27-11) 11th in the 6km event, helping the North to third place in the team standings.

Nearer to home, City of York picked up three medals in the North Yorkshire Schools Cross Country Championships, which took place at Knaresborough.

Maurice Calton-Seal took home the silver medal in the senior boys' race as he was narrowly beaten by Euan Brennan by just three seconds.

Luca Parker continued his fine cross country season with fifth place in the same race.

Finnian Hutchinson again found Ethan Hussey too tough to beat in the intermediate boys' race as he finished in second place about 100 metres behind.

There were four other runners from the club in the top 10 in this race as Herbert Antcliff came fifth, Kyle McLeay seventh, Archie Lawson eighth and Toby Antcliff ninth.

City of York’s two leading runners in the other two boys' events were Xavier Martin, who came ninth in the junior boys’ race, and Louis How, who was seventh in the Year 7 event.

Martha Carlton-Seal emulated her older brother by winning a medal in the intermediate girls, race as she came third, around 50 metres behind the winner Mena Scatchard.

Holly Moss and Abi Smith came seventh and ninth respectively in the same race.

City of York’s Lara Sterritt finished sixth in the senior girls’ race, while Frances Hogg came fourth in the Year 7 girls’ event.

Completing a great day for the club, Stephen Kirk won the Wuthering Heights Winter Wander 20-mile off-road race at Haworth in a time of 3 hours 21 minutes.

The irrepressible Kirk was then City of York’s first man home in Sunday’s Temple Newsam 10-mile event.

He came 21st in 69-19, while Karen Williams was the club’s leading lady, clocking 91-01 for 327th.
