ACOMB Hockey Club Men's first team had a disappointing day as they fell 2-0 at lowly Wakefield III in Yorkshire League division two.

The Tangerines were kept on the back foot by a youthful home side, Baz Whitfield, Simon Theaker and Stuart Baxter doing well to repel attacks while keeper Craig Brown made some good saves.

After 25 minutes, though, Wakefield enjoyed a huge piece of luck when a long strike was deflected in by an attacker, wrong-footing Brown.

Acomb struggled with a couple of injuries after the break but their player-of-the-match, James Graham Brown, still controlled midfield for short periods while Ryan Smith and Nick Linfoot started several attacks down the right, albeit drawing a blank.

However, slightly against the run of play, Wakefield doubled their advantage with a scrappy goal.

Acomb pressed again through Matt Dickenson and Dave Richardson but a well-marked James Tindall could not convert.

High-flying Acomb Men II drew 0-0 against a strengthened Airedale II but thrashed Driffield III 7-0 24 hours later to go second in division five north.

Tangerines keeper Richard Crossland made a few fine saves in the former, including from a one-on-one, in an entertaining and even first half. Both stoppers again impressed in the second, with Crossland and defender Bob Unsworth named Acomb's men of the match.

The following day, they won convincingly with Anthony Daley, Richard Luscombe, Owen Wilkie, skipper Jonny Brown and brother Tom Brown all netting in the first half.

After the break it took the Tangerines 19 minutes to record their sixth goal when Daley found Wilkie to net his second, before Jonny Brown converted a penalty corner for his second.

Driffield looked for a consolation but Crossland again kept a clean sheet with David Brown’s solid defence earning him the man-of-the-match accolade.

Acomb Ladies also had a double header at Energise in Yorkshire League division one - drawing 1-1 with neighbours City of York III and 3-3 with Pocklington, having led the latter 3-0.

Hannah Yoward netted against York but the Tangerine forward line was otherwise kept at bay by the keeper.

The game against Pocklington was fiercely competitive - only goal-difference separating the teams in the table.

A Kerry Woods penalty corner strike opened the scoring after five minutes and, 20 minutes later, Georgi Wood linked with Jess Slater to find Yoward who neatly made it 2-0.

After the break, Woods netted a second penalty corner.

However, the visitors then scored twice on the break and bagged an equaliser from a penalty corner.

Jane Elsworth repelled further attacks for the last 15 minutes while strong defence at the other end broke up Acomb's dangerous forages.
