CITY of York Hockey Club’s Men I edged up to second in North League division one with a 3-3 draw at Wilmslow, followed by a 5-3 home victory over Lindum.

Leeds II dropped valuable points in a 3-2 defeat at Stockton, opening the door for City to leapfrog them on goal-difference.

City made a slow start to the first game of their double-header, and Wilmslow were ahead within minutes of the push back. But this kicked the visitors into gear, and they began to dominate possession and press well.

They levelled matters when captain Ant Bull made a dangerous run along the baseline and played the ball in front of goal for Alex Cockram to finish.

Wilmslow then came back into the contest, forcing City into sturdy defending, but they eventually found a gap and their second goal.

City dug deep and came back at the hosts with a charge towards goal which resulted in a penalty flick, with the ball beating the keeper and ending up on the foot of Wilmslow’s last man. Cockram duly slotted home the set-piece.

York went into the second period looking strong and holding onto the ball well, eventually resulting in a goal for Jack Purrington.

Wilmslow were not finished, though, and managed to draw level at the end of the half.

City’s home win over Lindum the day after was hard-fought.

The hosts’ tired legs and minds allowed Lindum to break through and earn a penalty stroke, which was dispatched.

But City were again galvanized by going behind and found the equaliser through some slick build-up play and a clinical reverse finish from Cockram.

From a short corner, Tom Feasby was then on hand to slot in from a tight angle to give City a 2-1 half-time lead.

Purrington extended that lead early in the second period as he deflected in Jack Fletcher’s set-up after smart work in the ‘D’.

However, some ill-discipline from the hosts gave Lindum an opportunity to get back into the game, and they took full advantage.

While Bull was off the field having received a green card, City’s lead was halved, before a well-taken short corner and finish erased it completely.

Alex Lake was then shown his first yellow card of the season, reducing York to 10 men again.

With the game heading for another draw, Feasby gave City a lifeline as he rounded the keeper and slotted in clinically from an angle, before Fletcher’s goal from a counter-attack in the final few minutes put the result beyond doubt.

Halifax I conceded their game to City of York II in the Yorkshire League premier division because they were unable to raise a team. City were awarded a 3-0 win.

City of York III were 2-0 home winners over Hull University in division one thanks to goals from John Woodhouse and Joel Wilson.

But they lost their second game of a double-header 3-0 at Doncaster III.

City of York VIII were 7-0 winners over City of York IX in a division five north club derby. Ali Birch got a hat-trick, Chris Allerton two goals and Pete Perryman and Lewis Francis one each.

City of York X earned a 4-1 home win over Thirsk & Malton IV in Yorkshire League men’s development north division.

Player-of-the-match Jasper Richardson scored twice, and Katie Wiggins and Emil Waites also netted in the comeback victory.
