A YORK RI select XV welcomed the Bumble Bees to New Lane for an exhibition match which the club hopes will lead to the fielding of a regular mixed ability team.

The Bumbles brought a large squad of players and started well from the kick-off.

Relentless attack from the visitors strained the RI defensive line, with their big carriers battering the channels around the ruck.

When the time was right, the ball was shipped out and some rapid back play stretched the New Lane side further still.

The pressure resulted in a well earned try from back rower Ryan before RI sneaked a lucky score and levelled things for half-time.

Unfortunately, RI lost their newest player and stand out performer, Martin, at the break

The Bumbles used their bench well and started the second half with an even higher intensity. The hit of the match came from the gigantic Bumbles second rower who covered 20 metres in a flash and caught RI vet Howard T Reed at full pelt.

Another courageous attack, led by an imposing performance from their stand off, saw their nippy winger in acres of space only to be denied just short by a fine RI cover tackle.

The visitors bagged themselves a second try from some powerful forward play. Against the run of play RI then levelled the try count but could not bag the extras.

The game finished as a draw in a fitting end to what was a great day of rugby.

The club would like to thank all at International Mixed Ability Sport for their help in arranging the fixture, and for their ongoing support of their efforts to start our own mixed ability team.
