WILL JARVIS hit a hat-trick as York Schoolboys Under-15s got off the mark in the Yorkshire League at the third time of asking.

After two defeats, York - buoyed by last week's 5-2 friendly win over Sheffield - beat Calderdale 4-3 at home, with manager Alan Oliver hailing an “outstanding performance”.

Both teams started brightly, with York edging possession and breaking the deadlock in the 12th minute through Luke Jones, who fired across the keeper into the bottom corner from inside the box.

A mix-up in the home penalty area soon after, however, ended with the ball in York’s net.

The hosts pressed to restore their lead and came close a number of times, Jones’ header being cleared off the line, before they took a 2-1 half-time lead - Louis Jarvis releasing Will Jarvis on the counter, with the latter taking the ball past a defender and slotting into the bottom corner.

Jarvis scored again a minute into the second period, receiving a slide-rule pass from Liam White and slotting home from four yards.

Calderdale quickly pulled one back following good counter-attacking play, York being outnumbered at the back.

End-to-end play saw both sides have chances, but neither keeper was unduly troubled until the hour mark, when man-of-the-match Jarvis completed his hat-trick after being played through by Harvey Stephenson.

A well-taken Calderdale free kick five minutes later set up an exciting finish, but both defences held strong thereafter.

York Schoolboys U12s returned to league action with a 6-0 home win against Barnsley - Ronnie Kelly and Dan Gallagher scoring a brace each.

The hosts had to weather early pressure, before Kelly scored the only goal of the first period, played in by Liam Mainprize.

After the break, Fraser Clarke and Gallagher’s double increased the lead, and a deflected Mainprize effort put York firmly in control.

The final period stayed goalless despite York’s numerous chances, until Chris Pooley crossed for Kelly to score his second.

Adam Clarkson was man of the match.

York Schoolboys U11s were in the goals again with a second consecutive 8-1 league win, this time at Barnsley.

Charlie Thompson continued his scoring streak, netting his first after a quarter of an hour from a tight angle.

Alex Widdup scored from close range to give the visitors a two-goal lead.

Thompson scored two in the second period to complete his hat-trick, and the tireless James Rennocks then got his name on the scoresheet.

In the final third of the game, Barnsley pulled one back – which only inspired York further.

Thompson scored his fourth, while a long-range Will Hobson strike and an Arthur Jefferson-Hallet goal completed the rout.
