ASHLEY HUGILL'S run in the Dafabet English Open was halted in the second round as he lost 4-2 to Robert Milkins.

York-born Hugill was looking to build on his 4-2 victory over former World Championship finalist Nigel Bond in Monday's first round, especially with the UK Championship in his home city around the corner.

And he looked well set as he took a two-frame lead and then fired a 64 break in the third. However, it all then went wrong as world number 41 Milkins took that frame and the following three to ease into the third round.

It had been a close-run contest early on, Hugill taking the first two frames 67-64 and 73-45.

The world number 119 then managed his best break of the day, but ultimately he lost the third frame 65-64.

From there, the gap widened, Milkins claiming the final frames 66-22, 79-7 and 66-38.

Hugill, 23, from Melbourne near Pocklington, pocketed £2,500 for his victory over Bond - his biggest prize so far since joining the full professional ranks earlier this year, having struggled to otherwise get beyond the first round of World Snooker tour events.

The UK Championship starts at the York Barbican on November 28.
