BOOTHAM 'A' enjoyed a double over their club rivals on the first night of the new-look York Conservative Clubs Billiards League.

Following the withdrawal of Heworth, the league now sees teams play each other twice on one night.

Bootham 'A' beat Bootham 'B' 4-0 and 3-1 in the opening week.

In the first match, Ian Robinson beat Alf Appleby 150-140, Matt Smith defeated Colin Robinson 150-123, and Paul Mahoney ran out 150-94 victor over Tim Fillingham.

The second match saw Ian Robinson beat Stuart Martel 150-142 and Mahoney (22 break) triumph 150-101 against Colin Robinson.

Fillingham got a point for Bootham 'B' as he beat Matt Smith 150-140 despite Smith's 20 break, but the 'A' team took the aggregate.

The contests between Fulford and Acomb were different.

Fulford won the first 4-0, as Tom Lewis, with a fine 50 break, beat John Ashwell 150-81, Terry Ward beat Trevor Ventress 150-135, and Alan Reed defeated Paul Holmes 150-145.

But the second game saw Acomb hit back to triumph 3-1.

Bob Smith won the first frame for Fulford 150-125 against John Ashwell, but Holmes defeated Ward by the same scoreline to leave the match entirely dependent on the last frame in which Ventress edged Reed 150-145.

The Conservative Clubs' Slater Cup Pairs snooker league for 'C' teams also got under way.

Heworth beat Fulford 3-2 with victories for McCready and Robinson, Faircliffe and Faircliffe, and Doyle and Rochester. Fulford's victors were Brown and Dunmore, and Rout and Patsia.

Bootham beat Acomb 3-2, win wins from Bunce and Bunce, Jackson and Crowe, and Jan Suchecki and Steve Cain. Acomb wins came from Bushell and Kadis followed by Wade and Dalby.
