SUPER-SUB Flynn McNaughton was hailed off the bench to fire York City into the third qualifying round of the FA Youth Cup.

McNaughton netted twice having also teed up fellow attacker Ryan Edmondson for the opener as the Minstermites defeated Harrogate Railway 3-1 at Bootham Crescent.

The result means Steve Torpey’s teenagers, who have also beaten Tadcaster Albion and Harrogate Town in this season’s competition on their own soil, now await the identity of their next opponents during the week commencing Monday, October 16.

McNaughton set up Edmondson within three minutes of being on the field with the latter back-heeling in his low cross just before the hour mark.

The visitors levelled just moments later when Lewis Bernard beat Ryan Whitley, but McNaughton put City back in the ascendancy on 75 minutes, firing past Railway keeper Dan Dekanski with a low strike from the edge of the area.

McNaughton then wrapped things up for the hosts four minutes from time with another composed finish from the corner of the box.

Victory was achieved despite midfielder Harry Thompson still being ruled out by the knee injury he suffered against Harrogate in the previous round.

In a low-key first half, Edmondson and Aaron Haswell were earlier given the best opportunities to open the scoring.
